"The Hastshilp Mela Ujjain provides a powerful platform for the artisans, craftsmen and rural entrepreneurs of the country. The aim of the mela is to strengthen the rural economy, promote local products and take artisans forward from 'local to global'. We warmly welcome the talented craftsmen who have come to the soil of Ujjain from various states of the country. I believe this mela will not only safeguard our cultural heritage but will also open new opportunities and a path to sustainable development for the artisans."
Hastshilp Mela — Introduction
On the occasion of the Akhil Bharatiya Kalidas Samaroh, the Zila Panchayat Ujjain has been organising this mela since 2001 with the objective of keeping the cultural and religious traditions of Ujjain alive.
In the mela, weavers, cooperative societies, industrial cooperative members, self-help groups, artisans and self-employed workers from 15 states of India — principally Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Assam and Chhattisgarh — are invited to display, promote and sell their products.
Roughly 300 stalls are constructed and allotted in the mela, and excellent lighting is also arranged. Suitable arrangements are made for the production and personal safety of stall holders, and the beneficiary participants are provided with a stall free of charge.
